Picking Up the Thread with Sikh Elders

Artlink invited artists Bryony and Musarat Raza to develop a project exploring contemporary and traditional approaches to textiles with a group of 15 Sikh ladies across nine half day workshops from Touchstone. The sessions took place in the newly refurbished basement space in Artlink's building as well as an off site research visit to the Royal Armouries.

Information gathered through observational drawing during a trip to the Indian Army displays inspired the following weeks. Together the ladies developed skills in tie dying, printing, sewing, drawing, stenciling, devore and painting.

The sessions encouraged social interaction amongst participants, through sharing and learning new skills, increasing confidence and improving wellbeing. Across the weeks, everybody created a final textile piece with the techniques they had learnt during the sessions which was exhibited at Artlink.
